What Is The Ideal Height To Cut The Grass? : Home Improvement : DIY Network

Learn all the factors that determine the ideal height for mowing grass and at what height you should be cutting your lawn.

How Often Should You Mow a Growing Lawn?

The grass is always greener… when you treat your finicky lawn right. But beware, the right way isn't exactly the intuitive way (just letting it grow probably isn't the smart move). The gardening and landscaping experts at Stack Exchange offer tips on keeping your lawn healthy and handsome.

Then you best choice is to the cyclinder mower like this one

This and the atco & web are the three best mowers to cut fine grass turf for bowling greens and tennis courts .As long as the blades are sharpened and adjusted to the corect hieght.
Note that for average lawns the cut should be about a 1/3 of the grass length ie just topping of it off but for fine grass the height needs to be short to allow play

How ever if  you  just  got  a  normal  amenity lawn  and  the  grounds  uneven  as  in  most  lawns  I  haved  mowed you  can  choose one  of  the  hayter  ranges  or  basicly  any    rotary  mower  with a  roller.

As  its  the  roller  that  presses  the  blade  down  as  it  cuts  giving  you  that  stripe  effect  as  a  grass  blade  has  two  colored  side  light  on  top  dark  underneath.

Best  Practice  for  a  perfect  striped  lawn

As I  already  mentioned  above  that  it's  the  fact  the  blade  has  two  colors.  And  its  fact  that  the  rollers  are  flattening  the  grass  one  way  and   the  next.

So  to  get  a  stripe  each  time  is  to   alternate  you're  moving  from  one  week  to  the  next &  when  you  cut  do  the  edges  first   so  you  can  turn  your  mower  easily  without  leaving  arc  like  circles  in  the  grass

For a nice stripe lawn on uneven ground , you can't go far wrong than buying a Hayter Harrier

Here is an extensive guide on what's the correct setting for your mower in the USA.
Over here in the UK the same principle applies ( about third off ) but as many of us who are in the trade knows that this is very difficult to achieve when you clients request that you cut short. thinking that they might save money by doing this.
The long and tail of it all is that if you seeked groundsman advise on this matter & they would have told you that they cut it short ~ but what they don't tell you is that;-
(a) they have
To allow play like bowls, tennis & cricket pitches to be played.
This requires a flat surface and short grass.
(b) That because the grass is mowed short they have to top up the nutrients and top dressing every year.
I should know I have been doing bowling greens for 13 years
So by cutting a bit higher you get healthy grass cutting low it will result in further expense in you feeding it and keeping it green

Mowing Your Lawn the Right Way - For Dummies

Proper mowing is one of the most important practices in keeping your lawn healthy. Grasses are like most plants — if you clip off the growing points (for grass, it's in the crown, where the new leaves develop), the plants branch out and become denser, which in this case, turns thousands of individual grass plants into a tightly woven turf or a lawn. If you didn't mow at all, your yard would look more like a prairie than a lawn. But the mere act of mowing isn't what makes a lawn look good. Mowing...

In our How to replace a Qualcast blade on a Classic Petrol 35s lawnmower video, Helen shows you how to adjust your lawnmower's blade using two screws on either side of the blade. These screws are NOT designed to adjust your grass cutting height. They are to ensure that your black fixed bottom blade's alignment is even and level with your red cutting cylinder. If your bottom blade isn't aligned properly, your mower will not produce a clean and even cut. This is of particular interest...

My  personal  views

In  my  opinion, I  sitting  on  the  fence  with  this  cause  they  do  have  their  pros  &  Cons  like  I  have  described  above.

As  a  professional  in  the trade, I  know  the  fact  that  by  mulching  the  grass  it  will

  • Save  me  time  &  Petrol   from  emptying  the  grass  clipping  at  the  dump
  • It  will evidently  save  you  giving  the  grass  a  feed  every  time   -  But  that's  no  excuse  not  to  carry  on  other  lawn  care  task  in  spring  right  through  to  winter.

The  downside  is

  • that  cause  the  blades  are  terribly  fine  they  will  need  to  resharpen  every  year  otherwise  they  will just  tear  it
  • You  will  still  have  to  use  your  old  mowers   just  to  cut  it  when  the  grass  is  long (  feels  like  a  false  economy )
  • And  I  know  from  experience  that  many  of  clients  want  a  nice  cut  grass  with  all  the  clipping  picked  up  ~  as  they  don't  want  grass  coming  into  their  home

Mowing - it's easy, isn't it? How to mow your lawn

At last the sun is beginning to make its presence known and the temperatures are rising – a great excuse to rush out into the garden. And I bet one of the first thing many gardeners did was to pull out the lawn mower, dust off the cobwebs, check the oil and make sure the cables work. Next thing they did? Well, mow of course. All you need is a functioning mower and you’re off, correct? Well, not quite, as I’ll explain. Even if you follow a good feeding programme and find time for aerating and scarifying, and even if you keep your moss under control, there is one problem many gardeners experience – patches of yellowing grass. It’s the blight of many a garden once the mowing season arrives.
